Chemistry is the study of matter and how it changes. All sciences involve matter, therefore an understanding of chemistry is essential to succeed in any science course. Chemistry is known as the central science.
Chemistry will challenge you to think and problem solve. Learning how to solve problems is essential to becoming independent. I hope chemistry prepares you to fly on your own. Do you know what band and song contains the lyric, Oh, and when the kids are old enough, We're gonna teach them to fly?
Having a basic understanding of chemistry can save your life. You are exposed to chemicals everyday and the interactions of some chemicals is dangerous. In class you will learn the chemical equation for the reaction between ammonia and bleach. One should never mix ammonia and bleach because a toxic gas will form. Some chemicals upon decomposition can save your life. Sodium azide decomposes rapidly to form nitrogen gas and is used in airbags. Why add salt to water when preparing pasta? How do I get the tarnish off my silver? Many of life's questions can be answered with some chemistry knowledge. Just wait and see.
