MCHS Redskin Speech Team Advances 5 Students to IHSA State Finals
The Morris Redskin Speech Team has advanced a school high 5 students to the IHSA State Speech Team finals at the Peoria Civic Center on February 19-20. These students will be representing their school in three events at this competition.
Advancing in Dramatic Duet Acting are Samantha Courter and Jessica Galang. This duo took 4th at the IHSA regional competition and took 3rd at Sectionals. Samantha is a junior in her third year of competition, while Jessica is a senior also in her third year of speech. This marks Jessica¹s second time advancing to the state finals, going last year in Humorous Duet Acting.
Headed to state in the event of Humorous Duet Acting are Andrew Bennett and Kara Morrall. The humorous duet team took 4th place at Regionals and 2nd at Sectionals to advance them to state. Senior Andrew Bennett is in his third year of competition; while Kara is a senior in her fourth year of competition. This also marks Kara¹s second time at the state finals, having advanced last year in Special Occasion Speaking.
Senior and 4 year team member Logan Simpson took third at Regionals and first place at Sectional competition to advance to the state finals in the event of Impromptu Speaking.
The speech team begins practices in October and competes in the months of December through February. There are 42 students on the team. Of the hundreds of students in each event state-wide, the state qualifiers are in the top 18. They will compete Friday and Saturday in Peoria at the State finals.
The MCHS Speech Team is coached by head coach Andrea Gustafson,as well as assistant coaches Kelli Walker and Jen Bamonte.
