Volleyball Dads in the know...
The father’s of three Morris Volleyball players have the opportunity to be a bit more involved than the other fathers this year. These three fathers’ happen to be a part of the MCHS Administrative team. Assistant principal Jeff Johnson’s daughter, Taylor, plays at the varsity level, Athletic Director George Dergo’s daughter, Heather, plays at the sophomore level and Principal Kelly Hussey’s daughter, Morgan, plays at the freshman level.
Sometimes having the opportunity does not always mean you take advantage of it, so let’s see if these Dads know their stuff or not……
What position does your daughter play?
JJ: Outside hitter
GD: Defensive specialist
KH: Morgan is a setter and a hitter.
What does a rally point mean?
JJ: Point when your team serves it.
GD: It’s a point scored off a rally, not a service point.
KH: Anytime the ball is put into play, one of the teams will earn a point for winning that rally.
Is the team your daughter’s on running a 6-2 or 5-1 offense?
JJ: 6-2 that is a guess!
GD: 6-2
KH: 6-2
What does your daughter call when she wants to spike the ball?
JJ: Kill
GD: Red or white according to what side of the court she is playing.
KH: She calls the number of the zone she is hitting in, so that the setter knows she is prepared to hit the ball.
What do the practice shirts say this year and what would you say is the meaning behind each shirt?
JJ: Maximize, Demand, Fearless—it is the focus of the practice that particular day.
GD: Fearless-play without fear, Maximize—Get to your full potential, Demand- Demand excellence from yourself and your teammates.
KH: Fearless: That they should respect all opponents but fear none; which really means, you are in control of your own playing ability if you allow yourself to be.
Maximize: That they must push hard all of the time in order to be their own best, and force everyone on the team to work to keep up.
Demand: That they must be able to reach inside themselves and do more with every opportunity.
What is your daughter’s favorite part of the sport of volleyball?
JJ: She enjoys the girls on the team and the coaches.
GD: Team camaraderie
KH: The team nature and the game are fast pace.
If you could give your daughter any advice about playing a team sport what would it be?
JJ: Have fun, know your role and play hard!
GD: Be team player!
KH: If you asked her, she would already know this; before any practice or game, and whenever I get the chance, my wish and statement is that she “Play hard and have fun!”
Seems like these Dad’s are paying attention and getting involved in the volleyball season! Please join them and take in a game or two!
