Mr. Bob Carlson

Welcome to ESL! I teach English-as-a-Second Language. This is my fifteenth year on the faculty and my twentieth year of association with MCHS. I have bachelors and masters degrees in Music Education from Northwestern University, plus post-graduate education in ESL from National Louis University and the University of St. Francis. My greatest pleasure in teaching is to see my students graduate.

I teach three courses: Transitional English (ESL), Transitional US History, and Transitional History of Western Civilization. In ESL, the student learns all four areas of literacy: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The material is taught in sequence, starting with the most basic grammar and vocabulary and becoming more difficult over time. Whole language teaching is also employed, via supplementary reading material and videos, in order to avoid teaching all material in isolation.

ESL texts and workbooks: Exploring English, series published by Longman
Supplementary reading, in simplified form, by Conan Doyle, Dickens, Brothers Grimm, et al
Video series: "Connect with English", published by the Annenberg/CPB Foundation, with printed material published by McGraw Hill
Transitional US History: America's Story, published by Steck-Vaughn
Transitional History of Western Civilization: World History and You,
published by Steck-Vaughn

¡Bienvenidos al ESL! Enseño Ingles como una Segunda Lengua. Es mi quinceavo año en la facultad, y my veinteavo año de asociación con MCHS. Tengo grados de bachiller y de licenciado en la educación de musica de la Universidad Northwestern, más educación adicional para enseñar Inglés como una Segunda Lengua. Mi gusto mejor es ver a mis estudiantes graduar.
