You will read all three books listed here. I suggest you read How to Read… first. It will help you with the next two. Then, read in whichever order you desire. Please keep a reader’s journal for the two fiction pieces. Note recurring themes, questions that arise, character motivations, desires, etc. that you find interesting. Your journals will become the basis of your first essays you write in class, so make them good. They will only benefit you more. These books are yours to keep and you should treat them as such. That means annotating and writing in the books to help you locate passages, piece important ideas together, and help you gain a deeper understanding of the work.
I recommend purchasing the paperbacks as pictured and described here as then we will all have the same copy. This will help in referencing passages and in class discussion.
These books may be ordered through the used book store in town: Books 'n' Bits - 621 Liberty Street, -- (815) 942-2525, or they are available online through amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com. You may also ask they order these versions at the Barnes & Noble in Joliet.
In June, I will begin a Facebook group just for your classes. I encourage you to “like” the group so that we can post questions, discuss the books, and get to know each other better before class starts.
See you in August! --Mrs. Gugerty
