National Honor Society

The Morris Community High School chapter of the National Honor Society was chartered in 1963. Juniors and seniors with at least a 4.875 cumulative grade point average at the end of their fifth (or seventh) semester are eligible for consideration for induction. Eligible students are invited to apply in January, and those who submit completed applications are evaluated on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

Dr. Ortiz serves as the faculty adviser to this organization. In that role, he oversees the eligibility and application process, and he serves as a non-voting sixth member of the NHS Faculty Council. The other five members of the Faculty Council are representatives of the faculty who review student applications and written feedback from all of the faculty members and administrators. Those five members then vote on each candidate, with a majority yes vote required for acceptance. The decisions of the Faculty Council are final.

Once accepted, students must then participate in the formal induction ceremony, which is held in February, in order to become members. This year's induction will be on Wednesday, February 20, 2019. Once inducted, students are required to maintain at least a 4.875 cumulative GPA in order to remain a member in good standing. Failure to do so places them on probation for one semester, after which they must have raised their cumulative GPA back up to 4.875. Otherwise, they are removed from the organization. The final semester's cumulative GPA is verified during the final week of senior attendance.

Students are also required to continue exhibiting good character, strong involvement, and regular participation in community service. After being inducted, students must complete at least ten hours of community service between the induction ceremony and the last day of school (for juniors) or the last day of senior attendance (for seniors). At least three of those hours must be for the Morris chapter's I Care project, which involves cleaning, labeling, and sorting donated eyeglasses for mission trips conducted by I Care International. Those students who are inducted as juniors must complete at least 31 hours of community service during their senior year, at least six of which must be for the I Care project.

Students who have questions about NHS are encouraged to see Dr. Ortiz in Room 130.
